Fashion, tourism, and the automotive industry are big employers in the city. The job market is very competitive, and much like in Milan, face-to-face networking is the best way to find a job, rather than looking online or trying to approach a company without prior introduction. For those who haven’t grasped as much Italian as they would like, there are many English /TEFL schools spread across the city. But of course, some knowledge of Italian is a major advantage when communicating with potential employers.
The city’s transport system is lack-lustre at best, but this is because the city is so small that there really isn’t a need for something like a metro system. As driving is scarce in Florence (which translates to a lack of air pollution), you will need to rely on the bus service to move around. The city’s main hub of activity, however, is concentrated around a 10-block radius so really everything is in walking distance. This is important, because Florence really is a city for walkers, and before you get excited, there isn’t a strong culture of cycling in the city as there aren’t any bike lanes. The train system means Florence is well connected though, and Santa Maria Novella will get you many other destinations across the country.
The cost of living in the city is less than many other major cities in Italy, though property prices remain relatively high due to the city being a top tourist destination. But the same rules apply, the further you go from the city centre, the cheaper the property (smaller and equally beautiful cities such as Prato and Pistoia can be found less than an hour away by train). You will want to look towards the south of the city for a little peace and quiet, as all of the tourist destinations are in the north. For family friendly districts, try the Campo di Marte which boasts a large sports complex and playground for the kids, or Bagno a Ripolito which is a short distance from the Florence International School. Slightly livelier areas include the Piazza di Santo Spirito and Via dei Benci.
Florence has the highest concentration of art anywhere in the world, and highlights include The Birth of Venus by Botticelli’s at The Uffizi Gallery, and Michelangelo’s breathtaking sculpture David at the Galleria dell’Accademia. Food lovers will want to visit the Mercato Centrale, a two story market where vendors sell everything you could possible want. For a quieter change of pace, visit the Boboli gardens or the Giardino Bardini, or higher a paddle board a travel down the Arno river to experience Florence for a completely different perspective.
